Thank you, that clears up a lot of the confusion. It leads to a few additional questions, though.

First: What about the Community Edition? Does it too differ technically from the Enterprise edition in significant ways? Is there an on-line source for documentation about it?

Second: Is there a consolidated and reasonably thorough description of the technical differences among the various versions?

Third: Where can I find instructions for checking files out and in? I searched the Alfresco Cloud documentation, and all I found was an incidental statement that the Edit in MS Office feature automatically checks a file out when you open it (and presumably back in when you close it). There must be a way to check files out and in explicitly, but I can't find it in the documentation and I don't see it in the UI.

I'm trying to evaluate Alfresco as a source control system for my company's technical documentation. I worked through the introductory tutorial, and I can now perform elementary operations like creating directories and uploading and downloading files. At this level, I've found Alfresco intuitive and

The cloud version is very different to the on premises versions (enterprise and community). The help documentation for the cloud is found at http://docs.alfresco.com/cloud/index.jsp

With versioning, I believe that all files in the Cloud edition are versionable and there is no way to stop that.

A paid subscription to Alfresco Cloud allows for WebDAV access which greatly simplifies working with the files from a desktop and automatically increments the file versions when a file is saved with the same name. The only downside of WebDAV access is you still need to use the Web Share interface to access the rich metadata and versioning details for any file.

Also note that the Alfresco Cloud interface has recently been refreshed and some of the documentation may not point you to the exact location for a button but the overall functionality has not changed.

I can't help with any comparison between the Alfresco editions as I only have experience with the Cloud. I do believe the Community and Enterprise editions are very similar with the Community edition lagging slightly in feature releases and missing some Enterprise features such as syncing with the Cloud edition (?).

In the Cloud edition, every file has the option to "Edit Offline" as described at http://docs.alfresco.com/cloud/topic/com.alfresco.cloud.doc/tasks/library-item-edit-offline-cloud.html
