Alfresco don't provide any support/warranty about the upgrade process on the Community version.

But typically you can upgrade a Community version forward an Enterprise version at the same version and then follow the upgrade path:

Otherwise if you want to upgrade a Community forward a Community version you have to upgrade each single version released, for example:

3.4.a->3.4.b->3.4.c->3.4.d->4.0.a->4.0.b->4.0.c->4.0.d->4.0.e->4.2.a->4.2.b->4.2.c->4.2.d
