You need to download the add-on's codebase into your local machine, make necessary changes, build and deploy into your local alfresco.
Before making any changes, refer the add-on's license agreement also.

For Ex :
Source code for Report dashlet can be found in http://code.google.com/p/report-dashlet/source/checkout url and license agreement is in http://code.google.com/p/report-dashlet/ url.
