topic CIFS checkin in Alfresco Archive

I have set up a CIFS mapped drive within Windows Explorer.
To do this I had to follow the instructions in the README file by adding the domain setting in file-servers.xml. (Note that the Readme file talks about file file-servers-custom.xml, but I think that is a typo, isn't it? There is no <host …> line in that file to modify.)

I can drag content items successfully into the folder and they then can be seen from the WebClient. That's great.
But when I drag an item, an image file for example, to the __CheckInOut.exe to do a formal versioned checkin, it throws the error:

Not a Valid Alfresco CIFS folder

Any idea of how to fix this?
Maybe I do need to modify file-servers-custom.xml? Do I need to specify the domain name somewhere else?

I can't get these to work either.

The problem is that they are using the wrong URL (URI, UNC? ) to access alfresco. I couldn't figure out how to change the network path to one that would work.
