Nevermind. I was using alfresco 1.3 that had freemarker 2.3.3 so it always busted at freemarker Template.process level.I updated to freemarker 2.3.8 and works fine after performing the changes described in the freemarker forums.

Thanks for the info. We have now upgraded FreeMarker to version 2.3.8, it will be present in the next Community/Enterprise drop.
