The problem is with your lucene query.
It is not correct syntactically.
Post your query which you are trying to execute.

The simple query that I am trying to execute is


// Create a query object, looking for all items with alfresco in the name of text
Query query = new Query(Constants.QUERY_LANG_LUCENE, "TEXT:'alfresco development team'");

This query is straight out of the Alfresco SDK in "samples\WebServiceSamples\source\org\alfresco\sample\webservice\Query1.java".

Looking at the query syntax, it appears to be consistent with the wiki for searches at http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Search.

The problem has been resolved by removing and re-installing Alfresco, after which the syntax i was using worked just fine. It's unfortunate that the parser errors are so ambiguous.
