I think there is a bug in 4.2.c for edit online. https://issues.alfresco.com/jira/browse/ALF-17221
Fixed in rev 44738
Try the nightly from http://dev.alfresco.com/downloads/nightly/dist/
There are some other fixes for Sharepoint module as well.

does this bug affect installations that don't use SharePoint?

I don't have SharePoint configured!
Whenever I press the "Edit Online" document actions link nothing happens.
I'm using the latest community version of Alfresco.

Hello,

It doesn't matter if you have it configured specifically - if you have installed it, you get the button. And it seems like you've installed SharePoint, since the code fragment that provides the basis for the button otherwise would not be contained in the system.
