clarification on 'hot backup', please

In http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Backup_and_Restore#Hot_Backup_Procedure, first it says to backup the database first, and then as soon as the backup completes, backup the file system in the order listed below.So it tells you what order to back them up in. And then AT THE END they tell you to backup

I use percona xtrabackup for the DB instead of MySQL dump as it does a hot backup of the data. Then the content store and all other files are backed up via tape.

Do you need to buy the Proprietary version in order to do the Hot Backup? Or does the GPL version work for that purpose?

Not sure by what you mean by "the proprietery version" Percona is an example of an open source hot backup tool for MySql.
