Hi there!

Thanks a lot for your reply. Actually I am trying to upgrade the production server. I have informed the users that today it will be out of order, so I will be able to do it. The reason that I am not doing it on a test machine it's because it is a Virtual Machine and I took a snapshot. So whatever it happened I would restore it to the previous state by reverting the snapshot.

Now, according to your suggestion I realize that I can't just "upgrade" the existing installation. So I will prepare a new Virtual Machine with the same operating system (Windows 2003 std) and I will install there the latest version (4.2.c). As soon as I am done with it I will transfer the database and the data, according to your suggestion.

In case I face any issues, I will post here again, taking advantage of your kindness

Kind regards,
Angelos Pitsos

Hi Joseph!

I would like to ask for a clarification. When you say "Install the 4.0" you mean that I can't do the migration/upgrade of Alfresco by installing 4.2.c, which is the latest version? Also I noticed that Alfresco 4.2.c has PostgreSQL and not MySQL as 3.4.0. I assume that this is a problem for the database restore. These two RDBMS are not compatible, isn't like that? And finally I was wondering, if you really mean to install 4.0, does this version have MySQL instead of PostgreSQL? And if yes, would be able then to upgrade 4.0 to 4.2.c? And would that mean that I will setup a third machine again?

Thanks a lot in advance for your support and your time!

Kind regards,
Angelos Pitsos

Hi Angelo
some points
from 3.4 u cannot directly upgrade to 4.2, from 3.4.x you upgrade to 4.0 and then to 4.2

About DB, you can have mysql in 4.2, you need to chose custom installation (option 2) and give the JDBC, DB Name, DB user and Password. After the installation is over you need to download the JDBC driver of MySQL (mysql-connector-java-5.1.22-bin.jar) and keep it in /tomcat/lib folder

You dont need to have postgresql installed for the upgrade, niether third machine

It is possible, follow the custom installation method(option 2)

For ur reference I am just adding the MySQL or DB parameter which u have to give during installation

db.driver=org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver
db.username=urmysqlusername
db.password=urmysqlusernamepassword
db.name=urmysqldatabasename
db.url=jdbc:mysql://localhost/urmysqldatabasename?useUnicode=yes&characterEncoding=UTF-8

‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍

Hi Joseph!

Thank you very much for your previous post, which indeed was a great guide and helped me to proceed with the upgrade from 3.4.0 to 4.0.e. We did a clean installation of Alfresco 4.0.e with MySQL installed in advance, then we dumped the database from the old server and we transferred the data. As soon as we started the services, the database converted and the tables increased from 84 into 100. We could also be able to login and operate Alfresco with success.

In the meantime, trying to upgrade from 4.0.e to 4.2.c we faced problems, as we can't login. What we did…
1. We did backup the data and the database again.
2. We completely uninstalled Alfresco 4.0.e
3. We installed Alfresco 4.2.c without PostgreSQL
4. We configured Alfresco on the installer wizard to connect with the MySQL 5.5 (which was already installed from the previous step/installation)
 Note: We did not touch the database, as it was converted already from the previous installation of Alfresco 4.0.e
5. We moved the backupped data into the new installation of Alfresco (4.2.c)
6. We started the services
7. We tried to login.

Failed to login!

Did we do any mistake on the procedure?

Also we noticed that the number of the tables were still 100. Should we see a bigger number on Alfresco 4.2.c?

Thank you very much for all your help and your kind support. It is much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Angelos Pitsos

Dear Joseph,

We realized that there was an issue with the server name, which had some dashes and underscores. As soon as we changed the computer name it worked, but we had several problems. We realized that several things were not working properly.

So we decided to revert back to 4.0.e in order to see what we did wrong on that step. Guess what? Even in Alfresco 4.0.e the search and some other functions were not working properly, too! So we started searching what could caused that problem.

After several hours of trials and searches on the web we found an important information. The 4.0.e has "sorl" indexer by default, but the 3.4.0 had "lucene" indexer. So that maybe was a reason that we couldn't rebuild the index properly on the new installation (4.0.e).

We searched a lot trying to find a solution on this, but we didn't find anything that could help. Would you be so kind to help us with this if you know how to solve the issue we are facing now?

Kind regards,
Angelos Pitsos

Hi Joseph,

I would like to thank you for all your help and your time. Actually we have finished with the upgrade of our Alfresco Server. I have to say that it was a nightmare to upgrade it. It took almost a week in order to complete all the steps and tests but now we are done!

I believe that we have to upgrade it more often in order to avoid the "steps" that we had to do this time, but you live and learn!

Again thanks a lot. Your help is much appreciated!

Kind regards,
Angelos Pitsos

Hi
You should always install a clean target version, start it up and familiarize yourself with it before attempting an upgrade. Then stop, switch in the old data and restart.

Yes, there are new tables, deleted tables and a whole lot of other bits done to your database. This is done automatically.
