Tha backup method using postgreSQL is with the pg_dump or pg_dumpall files. In that thread you can find the commands to do so.

I use MySQL(will be using postgresql) in future instance.
I created a script to backup the DM to another machine using rsync which runs daily at midnight, the steps are
(1) stop the alfresco
(2) dump the database
(3) rsync the DB files to the backup server
(4) rsync the alfresco install directory to the backup server
(5) start the alfresco
Please try this procedure
