Thank you for posting the list of things you've tried so far. Your post is a great example of how to ask for (and receive) help.

I agree that we do not have a great walkthrough of Web Quick Start for people that are completely new.

I see that you mentioned the Alfresco Developer Series page on ecmarchitect.com (thank you), but did you happen to come across this post?

It shows a simple customization of Web Quick Start called DeckShare and provides the high-level steps that go from out-of-the-box Web Quick Start to the resulting DeckShare site.
