Figured out my issue. This will probably be totally obvious to those of you used to Linux, but I am still a beginner.

After reviewing the log files I realized that when Alfresco/Tomcat was starting it was not able to resolve it's own hostname (in my case alfresco.localdomain). In order to resolve the issue I added a new line in the host file pointing 127.0.0.1 to alfresco.localdomain. I then started the services and everything worked as expected.

I realize this is an amateur mistake, but hopefully if any other noobies run into the same issue this will help them out.
