topic Content management and physical file system? in Alfresco Archive

I have already have an existing file structure on disk, which I would like to have reflected in Alfresco. The idea is that Alfresco would reflect the file tree and allow me to add metadata as needed, rather than requiring me to import this into a separate location. Can this be done and if how would I go about doing this?
