I just experienced the same thing… I believe the issues mrogers are referencing include:
http://issues.alfresco.com/jira/browse/ALF-8097
http://issues.alfresco.com/jira/browse/ALF-5190

… So basically, you can stop alfresco, update the fontbox and pdfbox files in tomcat/webapps/alfresco/WEB-INF/lib, and restart alfresco to fix. When I did this, using version 1.5.0, everything was fine.

mv fontbox-1.2.1.jar fontbox-1.2.1.jar.old
mv pdfbox-1.2.1.jar pdfbox-1.2.1.jar.old
curl -O http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/sites/rsync.apache.org/pdfbox/1.5.0/pdfbox-1.5.0.jar
curl -O http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/sites/rsync.apache.org/pdfbox/1.5.0/fontbox-1.5.0.jar
‍‍‍‍‍‍

There are a couple other issues that seem to indicate that the bundled java version is the problem (_18 is the bundled version), but this fix seems to work with it.

Also, on another helpful forum post, someone linked a pdf that reliably causes the crash: http://www.polymtl.ca/webmestre/A2010.pdf … useful for testing whether you've resolved the issue or not.

Hope this helps…
