Can you post you <tomcat home>/logs/catalina.out plz?
There might be more info there.

I found this issue with a similar effect:
https://issues.alfresco.com/jira/browse/ALF-13849

It's marked as fixed with 4.1, so I installed the latest nightly build (4.2) and this got the problem resolved.
