Using NodeService with Java API:

//Getting the parent nodes:
List<ChildAssociationRef> childs = serviceRegistry.getNodeService().getParentAssocs(yourNode);

//Getting the root nodes:
Set<NodeRef> rootNodes = serviceRegistry.getNodeService().getRootNode(yourNode);
