Just posting this for legacy purposes in case anyone else comes across this error. We had set up a versioning rule (not done in background) on the company home folder which meant that Alfresco was trying to apply an aspect to something it shouldn't have. This caused Alfresco to not start up. The only way to revert this is to use an earlier version of your database and content store.

FYI, it should also be possible to upgrade to 3.3.2 or higher to fix this issue.

Hi janv, yes it was an avenue we were going to go down, but in terms of the quickest fix this was the best option. Upgrading at some point will definitely happen however.
