In trying to get Alfresco working I installed on a fresh VM, and let Alfresco do all the set up. I then looked at the

/opt/alfresco-3.4.d/tomcat/shared/classes/alfresco-global.properties which had a definition on the line for the db;

db.url=jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/${db.name}?useUnicode=yes&characterEncoding=UTF-8

I pasted this into the alfresco-global.properties file of my live installation, restarted Alfresco and Presto! it worked.

Problem solved, I am up and running, remains now to set this up with a URL working from outside the network.
