Ok, I have partially figured this one out.

using cn=groups,dc=mystorechannel,dc=com as the groupSearchBase gets rid of the exceptions in alfresco.log, but none of my groups are synching, and I don't see any indications as to why in the log file.

Help!?!

I experienced the same error. The reason turned out to be that the security principal I was using did not have the correct access rights. A good way to check this is to run an LDAP query as follows:

ldapsearch -h <hostname> -b "ou=Groups,dc=mystorechannel,dc=com" -D "<security principal>" -w "<password>" -L "objectClass=*"
