That's kind of a loaded question really - you will not get a clear cut answer on a forum.

I think it depends quite a bit on what you intend to do. Both are good - there's a whole bunch of pros and cons depending on what exactly you want to do and what your Java experience is.

My suggestion would be to think about your project and what you need to do and then look at what the products support. With alfresco look at the wiki pages and read about setting up the development environment and decide based on what you read.

With Alfresco development I think Eclipse is probably the most common choice. I use both - for example NetBeans is pretty good for J2ME development.

that depends a lot on your preferences. I've used Eclipse for years, but found out that Netbeans is getting better and better.

But since the SDK's samples are Eclipse Projects, maybe you should try that one first and after getting experience take a look at Netbeans and see how you feel about it

Besides the eclipse projects that come with the SDK, is there something specific to alfresco that would be easier to do using Eclipse or Netbeans? What about Maven? I've been using netbeans for the past 5 years and like it a lot, but I'm willing to give Eclipse a try if there's something in the SDK or in alfresco itself that is easier to do using Eclipse. So, assuming that you have comparable experience with both Eclipse and Netbeans, and that you like both for developing regular web applications, is there something particular to alfresco or to the alfresco SDK that would make you choose one over the other for creating new content models, customizing the user interface and creating quartz jobs?

Eclipse is the IDE of choice for Alfresco, you can import the Alfresco projects directly in eclipse.
Although I haven't tried using NetBeans, but it depends on the taste of the individual, there's
no general rule of the thumb when it comes to Alfresco. You have the wider option to choose
the IDE which suits you the most
