Are you using a custom model - or have you changed your model at all before exporting? As I think there may be objects hanging around that no longer have model definitions…. (guessing)

yes,
I have added a namespace and some cystom type definitions to contentModel.xml.

I have been playing with a test type and it's very likely you make the correct assumption as I have a test space which probably hold content of a type that does not exist anymore.
Unfortunately when I try to browse to that space I get the same error (in web client: A system error happened during the operation: null) and none of my content items are shown.

How can I go and delete some of them? Or is it safer to just remove the test space and recreate it?

I would suggest you remove the Test space completely to be sure. Removing types from models and handling of the resulting issues is not something we have tackled yet.
