Develop own API to use Alfresco at back-end?

Hi,I'm new in Alfresco. I want to develop my own API as front-end (simple application) to interact with Alfresco and use its services at the back-end. I'm also new in WebScripts. I just want to upload and retrieve file system using alfresco services. Can anyone guide me, How to to develop my own API

are you work/develop web service? view with page it is special for developer http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Main_Page. I am new in alfresco to, bu i am have experiment with web script. and view this tomcat\webapps\alfresco\wsdl\
and view code extension office addin 2003 Look as it co-operates with alfresco

I just want to develop an API which will interact Alfresco and my own made java-based simple application. Alfresco would be using for storing and retrieving files at the back-end as it does but for front-end to me my own developed interface would be using. As you know to use Alfresco user must know the whole system but i don't want to use whole system i just want to use its file storing and retrieving system.
I hope you understood what exactly I'm asking. I'm actually very much new and just graduated.

I'd start by trying to use the web scripts that are already there. Then you can either use what is there already as a starting point for either extension or study.

You may also be able to access documents via one of the other remote interfaces such as CIFS or FTP if all you want is access to the content.

By following Wiki webscripts guide-lines and example, i completed file uploading and retrieving. But i have already developed a system in JSP which upload my files and can retrieve them too. I want to integrate my developed system with alfresco. So I can upload my files using my system and store in alfresco system and then can retrieve them too from alfresco.
I hope you understand what I'm trying to saying. I'm actually very new so maybe the way im explaining is not appropriate?
