Output patterns were kept as the default (shown above). Now, when I create new web content using this webform, it creates a rendition with the extension .html, as expected. But when I edit that file, I get another rendition, this time with the extension .xml.html. When I checked the Alfresco Node Reference for the xml file, I find that the name property has the value "filename".xml.
