I don't think you can edit Office files online. If I'm not mistaken you can only edit textfiles (such as pure text, HTML,…) online.

You won't ever see an "edit online" action for Office files.

To enable online-editing for them by default, just set "edit-link-type" to "webdav" in your web-client-config (preferably the *-custom.xml one in tomcat/shared/classes/alfresco/extension) and whenever you click on the icon or filename (requires Internet Explorer with ActiveX scripting enabled) it'll actually open the file in MS Office using WebDAV (so that Ctrl+S will save back directly into Alfresco).

i'm also facing the same problem. But not works at all.
i did like you said.
But after pressing ctrl+s it is asking me to save the file in local machine. (it is not saving the file by default). i enabled activex controlls in IE 7

I believe MS Office has to be installed with support for SharePoint, as the ActiveX being created to launch Office is named SharePoint.something…

If you have a JS Debugger, set a breakpoint in webdav.js and see what happens; I can't help more than this, as I'm using the exact same JS code in an app and it works like a charm.
(now, if Alfresco has changed and the JS code is called on some specific icon/action rather than the icon and file name, I don't know, as we're using neither Office nor IE, and I never personally setup an Alfresco with such a config for a client)

Folks,

I have tried they above and it works with Office 2007, when I click on Edit Online the document opens, I make changes and press Ctrl S and it is saved to the resporitory.

The problem I am haveing is that when I click on Edit Online with Office 2000 that is been used throughout my organisation nothing ever opens and I am stuck at this point.

Can someone tell me is it possible to do this with Office 2000.

Hi,

I have been able to configure the Word Document to be edited online using "webdav" configuration in web-client-config.xml at location <edit-link-type>webdav</edit-link-type>.

I am able to open the document, edit it and save it, but only using IE.
I am not able to reflect the same on firefox 3.0.14. Whe I click the edit link, it displays a dialog box for me (unlike IE) and asks me to either save it or open it using MS Word. When I open it using MS Word, it opens in read only mode.

Is there some other configuration I am missing? Or do I need to download some plugins for firefox?

Another Firefox-AddOn which works for me: IE-Tab2
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/92382/

You can configure FF to internally open websites of your Alfresco-Server with IE.
That helps for the Edit Online Function.

Do integration with zoho or with google docs. My company has zoho integration and it is the best thing.
