I think you may have hit the following issue:

https://issues.alfresco.com/jira/browse/ALF-2318

This is fixed in the next community (3.3g) release which should be released soon. In the meantime, you can either zip the file(s) (and use bulk import) or consider temporarily using the latest dev build:

http://dev.alfresco.com/downloads/nightly/dist/

Thanks Jan.

It looks like current users are normally using CIFS and/or FTP.
Even all the presentations refer to using CIFS or FTP. If that is the best practice, it is good to know. I will have my users trained accordingly.
