I have a firewall on the router on my network, and I can forward the port to the alfresco server. When I do that I can get the CIFS Server to work (i.e. I can map a network drive). However, after that, I am unable to connect to the existing (non-CIFS) shares on that server computer. I think I am

They are standard shared folders from a "server" computer running Vista. I have added these as network connections on my "client" computer and I am able to access these until I forward port 445 to the server computer. You will probably notice my newbie spin on working with CIFS, the firewall and ports required.

Basically you are running two services, trying to provide the same service on one mashine. Thats why Alfresco uses the "<servername>A" for accessing the CIFS shares.
1) Search the forum for other CIFS topics, someone mentioned deactivating Printer sharing for this to work correctly.
2) make sure to use the correct name
3) you it is a configuration trick, make sure to share it in the wiki.

I hope that helps
Norgan
