Hi All,I'm trying to set up ALfresco Community 3.2 on CENTOS 5.3. I followed the wiki HotTo for that conifg (http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Installing_Alfresco_Community_3.2_WAR_on_Centos_5.3). Everyething seemed to be as per the doc, but Tomcat returns a 404 when trying to launch Alfresco.here's the

Are you using a Java SDK from Sun?

Hi gronfelt,

Yes, I'm using the JDK1.6u06 mentioned on the howto page. I've also checked in 'alternatives' that the correct version (1.42 is also installed) is being used by default.

Dear Keith,
I am really new here, and have just installed Alfresco on Windows XP. I too have Java 6 update 6 – and it did not work. Then somewhere I found on this forum that you need Java 6 update 7 or greater. (I am sorry I cannot find the source now). So I installed the latest Java 6 update 16 and then I did nothing other than change the path in SetPaths.bat – and it worked. (I am not sure what is the Linux equivalent of SetPaths.bat is.)

interesting.

I started with JDK 1.6u16, but couldn't find the matching java package to make that version of java work under linux, but it might be worth another go.

From Gronfelt's post I get the feeling that my issue may relate to my java installation, so I can at least start looking there.

I also saw on another post that 3.2 is happier under tomcat6. I don't know if anyone can confirm that.

I am not one of those geeks – so I simply used the Stack Installer, and it did not work. The moment I installed Java 6, update 16 and set the paths, it started working.
Yes, I am using Tomcat 6 – but that came with the installer itself.

Tomcat 6 comes bundled with the Alfresco installer, which would be the easiest way to install Alfresco in CentOS 5.3. Is there any particular reason that you want to install from the WAR-file?

Java 1.6u16 is available from Sun:s Java download site:

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

There's an rmp.bin-file that could be used in CentOS.

Hi Gronfelt,

Mainly because there was a 'howto' for installing the war, and I had struggled with the installer using the CLI.

I did download and install the rpm.bin file in a previous installatino, but the howto also mentions java-1.6.0-sun-compat-1.6.0.06-1jpp.i586.rpm, which, unsuprisingly, throws an error if JDK 1.6u16 is installed. What I couldn't find was the equivilant file for 16.u16.

I'm on a fresh installation of centos so could rebuild the system from scratch again without an issue. Maybe that would be the best way to go to keep the system as clean as possible.

I'm not really sure you need the compat-package. If you set the environment variable $JAVA_HOME to the location of the Sun JDK (typically /usr/java/default in CentOS) before starting Tomcat, then that's the Java version that will be used. You won't be able to switch to that version with alternatives, but that doesn't really matter since you explicitly tell Tomcat to use the Sun JDK.

ah! that makes sense.

So would I be right in thinking that the java-xx-sun-compat package is just an interface to allow apps like alternatives to access that version of java?

Yes, what the compat package does is essentially creating symbolic links in the file system.
