The JIRA you mention (https://issues.alfresco.com/jira/browse/ALF-1824) was been marked as resolved for Enterprise 3.3.2. Those code changes have also been merged to HEAD targeted for Community 3.4.x (hence after Community 3.3g).

One option might be to check whether your issue is resolved in the latest "nightly" build (http://dev.alfresco.com/downloads/nightly/dist/) by downloading and setting up a completely separate test instance ? Please bear in mind that the "nightly" builds are unstable/untested and should be used for dev-only (ie. temporary) testing.

Alternatively, are you able to compare to a separate setup using non-Linux boxes ?

I have checked (and used) an alternate copy of the same version of virtual-tomcat that works on another server (MAC), but it has the same issue when I run it under RHEL5 (which is a virtual host…)

I will try the nightly build to see if that makes a difference.
