After a few missteps, I was able to get the installer to go through without any errors. I start Alfresco with 'alfresco.sh start' and the console responds with:&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Using CATALINA_BASE:&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; /opt/Alfresco/tomcat&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Using CATALINA_HOME:&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; /opt/Alfresco/tomcat&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /opt/Alfresco/tomcat/temp&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Using JRE_HOME:&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; /usr/java/latest&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Going to e.g. localhost:8080/share gives a 404 error;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt; HTTP Status 404 -&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;type Status report&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;message description The requested resource () is not available.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Apache Tomcat/6.0.18&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Going to e.g. localhost:8080/alfresco gives a long 500 error starting with;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;HTTP Status 500 -&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;type Exception report&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;message&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;description The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;exception&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;javax.servlet.ServletException: org.alfresco.error.AlfrescoRuntimeException: 10110003 Unable to retrieve object: site-index of type: page&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;…&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;(I can supply more if needed)&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Any ideas what's going on?       <description>&lt;HTML&gt;&lt;HEAD&gt;&lt;/HEAD&gt;&lt;BODY&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;I think I found the solution.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;A href="http://forums.alfresco.com/en/viewtopic.php?f=8&amp;amp;t=20361#p75516" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"&gt;http://forums.alfresco.com/en/viewtopic.php?f=8&amp;amp;t=20361#p75516&lt;/A&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;has the answer. It was a problem with my hosts file setup and also the url or ip address I used to access the site. I'm not totally clear on why it works or why Alfresco is so finicky. I just did as I was told and it worked .. finally.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/BODY&gt;&lt;/HTML&gt;</description>
