never used this API, but… aren't you missing the prefix for the custom propertie ?

sp.addSort("myPrefix:standardDownloadCount", false);

Or maybe the full QName:

sp.addSort("{http://minamespace/}standardDownloadCount", false);

With the corresponding character scaping of course.
