Here's a stupid question…is there an easy way to change the default sub-folder ordering presented in a document library folder (ie, list folders with month titles in their calendar order not alphabetically).

When you say "an easy way" that depends on your definition of "easy". The hardest part would be to come up with the logic to consistently order an array of strings to your particular requirements.

Once that's done, you'd need to override the doclist.get.js webscript on the repository to order the folders using your custom function. You'll also need to use the same sorting functions in treenode.get.js so the sidepanel's tree is consistently ordered.

This is still the case? Folder order is always alphabetically?

For now, yes. Sorting for the Document Library will be added soon.
