I reply to myself.
Replacing ImageMagick/convert.exe by the file convert.exe bundled with Alfresco 3.1 Entreprise did solve the problem.

I see the same error on 3.2. I first thought it could be fixed by renaming convert.exe to imconvert.exe and adjusting the properties files accordingly, but not so. Is that earlier version of convert.exe downloadable somewhere (I don't want to install the earlier version just to pick that one file up).

The problem is solved with the convert.exe bundled with Alfresco 3.1 Enterprise, which, I think, is accessible for Enterprise customers only.
Maybe, the convert.exe bundled with previous Community editions will work as well, but I haven't tested.
