First off, i'd like to apologize for my lack of alfresco knowledge as i'm coming from the FileNet world. I'm evaluating whether alfresco is a suitable replacement and everything looks good so far. The only issues i'm having is creating Content Types (Document Classes) and associated metadata properties. This seems really involved in alfresco and wanted to confirm if modifying the xml config is common practice or if theres some admin UI or tool that i'm overlooking. Do I need to adjust how I think about modeling Document Classes/Properties?

Working with the XML directly is the most common approach for content modelling. If you are looking for a dedicated tool, you will not (yet) find one made by Alfresco. But as far as I know there is an Eclipse based IDE out there called SIDE Labs, or something like that, that provides some Alfresco specific development and modelling tools. Haven't yet tried those out though.
