I haven't exposed my server externally, but I installed Alfresco on an Ubuntu 10.04 server recently. Just the basics so far – no email, etc. I found this guide very helpful:
http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-install-alfresco-community-3.3-on-ubuntu-server-10.04-lucid-lynx
You can probably Google something similar. Have to say, it was a bit of a challenging finding instructions for installing Alfresco.
I don't have a need to expose the server externally, and I'm using a home server anyway. Turns out my ISP won't allow incoming http traffic so I'd have to change services if I ever decide to go 'outside'.
Good luck.
