Migration Alfresco Explorer to Alfresco Share

Hi, we use Alfresco 3.2r Explorer and now we decided to use Share for the future.How can I migrate all my data with its structure from explorer to a share document library ?I hope CIFS is not th answer Thanks in advance…Michael

The Share document library is a space, accessible from the Explorer client - look in the Sites top-level folder.

Simply use the Cut / Paste action to move your content.

thanks for the hint. I just copied the folders with its content to a specified site.
Unfortunatly, I cant see the subfolders and the content.
Is there a special additional thing to do ?

Hi,
I've also tried to copy myspace (including sub-spaces) in Alfresco Explorer to the site/mysite/documentLibrary space.
But this doesn't work.
Any suggestion?

I use this method all the time whilst testing, so it does work. You'll need to supply more details about exactly what you're doing and what does/doesn't work.

So . . . if I have an existing collection of documents in Alfresco Explorer, and want to access those same documents in an Alfresco Share Document Library, how do you do that?? You suggest you have to copy them from one to the other. Does that mean you effectively have to have two separate collections? This article, http://tarnaeluin.wordpress.com/2009/08/10/alfresco-3-2-creating-a-better-collaboration-experience/#comment-464, seemed to note the same issue, e.g.,

The “Library” concept is where one can imagine an integration or tie into the main Alfresco repository. For example it would be great to have a Library that exposed a set of project documentation allowing users on a Share site focused on a project access to the project’s formal documentation. Hmmm….well that’s apparently not what the Alfresco guy’s had in mind. A Library is simply a space dedicated to document storage, but is not normally used outside of the Site. Strange. I sure hope they re-think that. It would be very powerful to be able to create new libraries and create them as “linked” from an existing Alfresco space.

I need to better understand how Share and the main Alfresco Explorer tool are integrated because we heavily use the document management tools in Alfresco Explorer.

There are a few options if you want to migrate from Explorer to Share.

1 - Move all your documents into one big Share site (or split them into lots of little Share sites).
2 - Copy all your documents into one big Share site (or split them into lots of little Share sites).
3 - Create and run a script that will use the addNode API to mirror the existing content into a Share site (you'd have to also create the folder structure either manually or as part of your script)
4 - Wait for the Share "Repository Document Library" which will allow for out-of-Site browsing. This is a feature planned for early next year, but is still in the wireframing / planning stage so I don't have much more information at this point.

Ah, thanks – sounds like this is what I was looking for, glad to hear it is in the works, will keep my eyes open for it.

The reason I was thinking about this is that there are some features in the Explorer interface (such as using content rules to transform documents when uploading) that are not available in Share, and which would be very useful to have to manipulate the content in Share, but Share has advantages in terms of usability. I understand I'm not exactly the first to think this might be a good idea . . .

Managing Rules won't be part of the early delivery - that's a separate (quite large) development that will be part of v3.3 later on (along with Advanced Search).
