I just did a quick test, and for MS Office it seems to work fine. Open Office is another story, and I'm not sure that it is entirely Alfresco's fault. Open office always opens webdav documents read-only, it may be the Alfresco lock issue mentioned, or just that webdav in open office is broken.

I downgraded to vesion 3.3 and done some tests on Mac:

Ok - NeoOffice 3.1.1 patch 2
You can not use native openoffice "Open File …" dialog to open file via webdav. Use "Load URL" menu in toolbars.
It's easy to add by clicking "Visible Buttons" on "Standard" toolbar.

NeoOffice opens file via webdav protocol with read/write permissions.
At this moment Alfresco shows it as "Locked by you"
You can change file and save it back.

When you close file in NeoOffice "Locked" icon in Alfresco will disappear.
Seems NeoOffice works Ok.

Not Ok - OpenOfice 3.2.1 OOO320m18
You can open file via native "Open File" menu.
Ooo-dev opens file w/o "Locked by you" icon in Alfresco.
It's bad.
You can change file and save it back.
It store in Alfresco correctly.

Not Ok - Ooo-dev (development version) 3.3.0, OOO330m5 (Build:9521)
Sutiation is the same.
You can open file via native "Open File" menu.
Ooo-dev opens file w/o "Locked by you" icon in Alfresco.
It's bad.
You can change file and save it back.
It store in Alfresco correctly.

Yeah sorry, actually this is 3.4a that I'm using. We just downloaded and installed yesterday (sorry for not explaining that). The issue comes when we map a web folder as a mapped drive (using webdrive, or even from windows 7 webdav). So I don't think it's open office or anything. I go to create a folder and try to rename it from "new folder" to something else and it tells me it's being locked by another program. It then stays as "new folder" unless I actually login to the web interface and change it from there. I am connecting as admin on the webdav drive.

If you have a look at the source log for webdav, there seems to be a commit after 3.4.a (revision 22662) that applies to lock issues (but no comment in commit). So I guess you will have to wait for 3.4.b. Or you can try a nightly build http://dev.alfresco.com/downloads/nightly/dist/.
