One other possibility might be to use the "remote" object to make HTTP calls from within web scripts.

I'm not sure if it's available in older versions of Surf. (Before it forked off into Spring Surf.)

Take a look at http://drquyong.com/myblog/?p=49 on how to enable the remote object (http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Surf_Platform_-_Freemarker_Template_and_JavaScript_API#remote) that you can use to make calls from within web scripts to other resources. In your ftls you should look at other js libraries (like YUI) for this functionality.
