Hi all,

I'm a n00b when it comes down to Alfresco, so I started with the "Getting Started with Web Content Management" (Alfresco Enterprise Edition 3.1). I'm running everything on my windows XP dev machine. Going through the tutorial, everything goes fine. Publishing works, unfortunately I don't know where.

The basic question is: where I can I see the site or what is the url of the site I have just published (http://localhost:8080/something/something/….) ops:

You can't. Alfresco WCM does not have an out of the box presentation framework. That is there is nothing to "show" your content after publishing. You'll have to custom build it yourself using Alfresco SURF or integrate with other frameworks such as Liferay, Drupal or Joomla.

For detailed walk through of how to build a website using Alfresco SURF and how to publish content from Alfresco WCM to that website see;

http://www.benh.co.uk/alfresco/surf-part-1-getting-started/
http://www.benh.co.uk/alfresco/surf-part-2-pages-and-navigation/
http://www.benh.co.uk/alfresco/surf-part-3-alfresco-wcm-content/

http://www.benh.co.uk/alfresco/screencast-deployment-and-delivery-overview-static-content/

This is where I get confused. The output from the WCM tutorial (Getting Started with Web Content Management (WCM) for Alfresco Community Edition 3.2), after deployment is a set of files and directories idential to the contents of any of the WAR files (and the corresponding directories) found in c:\alfresco\tomcat\webapps, yet when trying to place the files there and call them I get the following errors in the tomcat server window:

17-Oct-2009 09:30:01 org.apache.catalina.startup.HostConfig deployWAR
INFO: Deploying web application archive test.war
17-Oct-2009 09:30:02 org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start
SEVERE: Error filterStart
17-Oct-2009 09:30:02 org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start
SEVERE: Context [/test] startup failed due to previous errors

What is the difference between a web app deployed by Alfresco WCM and the pre-supplied WAR files (even Apache's own sample.war works when plonked in c:\alfresco\tomcat\webapps.

Colin Begg
