Preview fails due to space before port number

I'm implementing WCM in alfresco community 3.3g on linux server. I've configured the virtualization, but the preview 'eyeball' link doesn't work. I've determined that there's and embedded space between the colon and the port number in the generated URL, like this:http://admin.some-site.www--sandbo

Nothing like answering your own question. Just in case you have the same problem, here's the answer.

In the file /opt/alfresco/virtual-tomcat/conf/alfresco-virtserver.properties

the line

alfresco.virtserver.domain=AAA-BBB-CCC-DDD.ip.alfrescodemo.net

had a trailing space.
