For me - it is kind of a similar issue -

I am able to open http://localhost:8080/share, and when I login it says the following -

Failed to Login
The remote server may be unavailable or your authentication details have not been recognized.

But, I am able to login and play with alfresco! not SHARE. what could be wrong?

I solved my problem. I had to copy the share.war to /var/lib/tomcat5/webapps, I was following an install guide that was strictly for document management (alfresco.war) and so it left out that step.
