Hi,

I would say that you are on the right track, let the space represent your object, but put the metadata on the space rather that in an xml file. On how to do this, have a look at http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Data_Dictionary_Guide
Alfresco is very flexible in this regard, so you will be able to model in lots of different ways.

For listing the objects, create webscripts http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Web_Scripts
You will be able to retrieve your data for listing on the external website in many different ways, in html, json, atom, xml or whatever fits best with the external website.

Based on what I'm reading, Spaces are not versioned, correct? This would be a problem.
