I am having the same problem as your #2 in that I can not add content via the Client Portlet.

I am also not having the client portlet logging in to the user that is logged into liferay.
Anyone have any thoughts on what might be the problems?

For your problem #1 I had the same problem. Have you created a user account that matches the account in liferay? I believe this solved my problem once I properly set up the alfresco account. So if you have myaccount@liferay.com with password xxxxx you should add the account to alfresco for user myaccount and password xxxxx.
