Are you testing on an existing database? Which version of the Activiti Engine JAR are you using?

I got this also when I started playing around with activiti (for the first time last week). I had two versions of activiti jar (5.14 and 5.16).
As luck would have it, i ran the scripts from 5.16.. but deployed 5.14.

To see which one your database is built for

select * from ACT_GE_PROPERTY where name_ = 'schema.version';
</code>
