I noticed the tutorial is not updated for Alfresco 1.2. Is an updated version forthcoming?

It was updated just before the release, where are you finding the outdated version?

If you have performed an upgrade from 1.1 to 1.2 then we do not update the files you have inside Alfresco repository you have changed them. A fresh install of 1.2 will bootstrap with the new tutorial, also the tutorial can be found as part of the install in:
\alfresco\tomcat\webapps\alfresco\WEB-INF\classes\alfresco\bootstrap\Alfresco-Tutorial.pdf
You can update the content in your install to the latest from this file.
