I don't think Alfresco release final community versions any more. Previous version was 2.9B and this one is 3.0B .

As the Alfresco Labs 3 branch matures, we'll likely see fewer builds simply because it will grow increasingly more stable much the same way that subsequent releases of Alfresco Enteprise 3.

Is it still not clear if Alfresco is planning to perform any regression testing on labs releases or properly engage with community that they are done.

Both Labs 3 releases up till now are full of new exciting features but have fundamental things broken, such as FTP.

Thanks for reply. It gives good hope. I was feeling that community is unhappy with Alfresco withdrawing stable releases from anyone except Enterprise - "bad karma" for open source project.

Actually I tried out of the box release for windows with fresh install - what most people do.

I did not want to discuss particular problem with one feature, this was just an example. I am probably unlucky that bump into this problems as soon as install community / Labs release - but no luck since 2.1 - one or another makes it unusable even in a non-critical "friendly" project.

Regarding FTP - it runs, but if I attempt to copy in any directory structure it fails. Tried few clients.

Hi,

I have traditionally used Ms sharepoint services and MOSS. One of the most usable features of the MS product is the list feature and the ability to create custom lists with custom fields and even to do calculations in a list field. Looking at Alfresco share, this is one of the biggest reasons why I will not migrate to Alfresco share as it seems that similar functionality does not exist.

Can you share with us the plans and future features for Alfresco Share - e.g. will it become a real alternative to sharepoint?

The 2.9 branch was a throwaway of sorts and wasn't stabilized enough to justify a final release so it should be ignored.

What we'll be doing going forward is to initially release new Alfresco Labs builds on a more frequent basis. These incremental builds will incorporate stability fixes and new features so each new release can be considered to be more "stable" than the prior release. The letters will be used instead of numbers to indicate these successively improved releases.

Please note that the "Alfresco Labs 3b" label doesn't mean "Alfresco Labs 3 beta" rather, it means "Alfresco Labs version 3 release b".

There will be no direct 1-to-1 mapping between a "lettered" Alfresco Labs release and a "numbered" Alfresco Enterprise release, but they will coincide every so often which will give you an idea of which Labs release is roughly equivalent to a specific Alfresco Enterprise release.

As the Alfresco Labs 3 branch matures, we'll likely see fewer builds simply because it will grow increasingly more stable much the same way that subsequent releases of Alfresco Enteprise 3.X.

The way it's looking right now, one can expect a timeline like this:

Alfresco Labs 3a (July 2008)
Alfresco Labs 3b (September 2008)
Alfresco Labs 3c (October 2008) —-> Alfresco Enterprise 3.0
Alfresco Labs 3d (TBD)
.
.
.
Alfresco Labs 3x (TBD) —-> Alfresco Enterprise 3.1
(and so on)

This is a little different from the way we used to do it, in a good way… Before we would release a Community release, followed a few weeks later by an Enterprise release, we would then push out mostly Enterprise releases with occasional Community releases.

For example:
Alfresco 2.0 Community –>Alfresco 2.0 Enterprise
No Community Release –> Alfresco 2.0.1 Enterprise
No Community Release –> Alfresco 2.0.2 Enterprise
Alfresco 2.1 Community –> Alfresco 2.1 Enterprise
No Community Release –> Alfresco 2.1.1 Enterprise
No Community Release –> Alfresco 2.1.2 Enterprise
No Community Release –> Alfresco 2.1.3 Enterprise
No Community Release –> Alfresco 2.2 Enterprise
No Community Release –> Alfresco 2.1.4 Enterprise
No Community Release –> Alfresco 2.1.5 Enterprise
No Community Release –> Alfresco 2.2.1 Enterprise

What I hope this illustrates is that Alfresco Labs will enjoy more frequent updates than was previously available.

I hope this makes sense and alleviates any confusion.

Hi Luis,

3c will be out sometime shortly though I don't have the specific details just yet. In the meantime get a nightly build of 3c from: http://dev.alfresco.com/downloads/nightly/dist/
As you can see, the 3c label has been applied, so the wait shouldn't be long.

I've had a look for the nightly build but due to some troubles installing wars on a jboss I got back to the full-installer. (Ok it wasn't having the fun
working on issues, more or less I hadn't the time to do it ) but on the location everything is great but there isn't a full-installer for linux.

I've seen something that looks like but isn't: AlfrescoDeployLabs-3c-Linux-x86-Install
In 3b it was a full installer but this one is much to small….

Do you think it's possible to provide a full-install in the nightly build? It makes it easier to play with a new version.

The only extras in the full installer are the JDK and OpenOffice, which you'd be better off downloading once yourself, rather than keep having to download them in our installer.

Strange thing. I thought that I had downloaded the full installer (3b) (because every link points to it) but that wouldn't explain why there wasn't a jdk and oo included.

So is the Oct 15th timestamp just wrong or has the nightly build not been updated?

What are the criteria for the 3c release? Is there a QA test suite that it has to build? A list of bugs that are marked as closed. I'm just looking for something we can track/measure to get a sense of when it may be released.

Full installers are great for testing because they JustWork. I really like your full installers, just a few clicks and everything is set up and running. And, yes, they include OO and JDK

Finally some action again on the public SVN. Michael just checked in Alfresco Studio. I haven't figured out how to access it yet through my browser now that I've built the project, have to dig into the code I guess. Seems things are firming up there. Nice to have nightly builds again though.
