I managed to solve this.
For anyone else who runs across this problem, the exception is a bit deceptive. It is not actually a security issue.

3.0b does not include the "projectfolder" type in its applicationModel. If you copy the applicationModel.xml (located in tomcat/webapps/alfresco/WEB-INF/classes/alfresco/model) from the 2.9 alfresco into the 3.0 version then restart it all works.

I have the same problem. I copied the applicationModel.xml file, but the Projects folder still do not appear.

Any idea?

could it be, that you need to drop the databases and restart from scratch ?
