To view an image your browser is going to have to download it. Only way around it is to use Flash to display the images.

1. Customise Alfresco client to use Flash to display images.
2. Use the FlexSpaces client http://forums.alfresco.com/en/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=11876
3. Use the pdf2swf tools' jpeg2swf to create Flash previews of images. Pdf2swf configured as a tranformer in Alfresco.

A clever user could figure out how to save the .swf preview.

Anything shown in a web browser is pushed down to the client machine.

I would suggest looking at their the thumbnails project, where you could have only low res thumbnails displayed or look at using some rendering actions to place watermarks on the images so that when they are downloaded and displayed in the browser they are not the original image.

If you provided a use-case (what you are trying to achieve with this) it would be helpful for giving better advice.

beren
