It rather depends upon what you want and need from your CMS. Alfresco is an Enterprise class content management system which means it can be (and is) used for large and demanding applications.

The product is now mature being on its third major version but it is still growing quickly and the list of advantages are many.

I heard that the last versions are still beta, and that the last stable version is 2.2.
Usually I'd go for the last stable version. It seems like a big gap between the last stable version and the last version, is that so?

The latest stable versions are Enterprise 3.0.1 and Labs 3D/Stable and are not beta quality. (Although there will be optional components of Labs such as Web Studio which is at Beta quality.)

You, of course, can also use Enterprise 2.2.2 or Labs 2.9C but many users want the new features of Alfresco 3 such as sharepoint support or the share application.

Here's a link to the new roadmap http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Roadmap

Alfresco is the revolution in modern ECM and WCM area. OpenCms was and still is an evolution and the grandfather in Java / XML based Open Source WCM technology and doesn't claim to offer any document management and transformation services as Alfresco does. Alfresco has a sound architecture, provides through its Surf Platform, Share for building Social Networks, its RestFul CMIS support for content integration services and its upcoming Webstudio all that what you need to bulid enterprise class ECM, WCM and Portal solutions faster, safer and nicer than ever! Lets say, the advantage is: with Alfresco you will be armed for the future!
