I have successfully installed Eclipse and apparently also successfully installed the jBPM graphical workflow designer - at least when I start a "new" project I am offered the possibility of starting a new jBoss jBPM project.However, when I start the new project I'm asked to identify the jBPM runtime

yes, you must install jbpm. Look at http://labs.jboss.com/jbossjbpm/downloads/
Download jbpm-jpdl-3.2.2, unzip it into a directory and set in:
eclipse->window->preferences->JBoss jbpm->Runtime locations
the directory where you have unzipped the file
