I checked the alf_data directory, and this time there was some content in it (previously, there has just been an hsql_data directory with a couple of alfresco.* files in it).

I cleared out the database, recreated a fresh alf_data and put the license file in the right place. This time it created the database and content store correctly, read the license file and started without any problems.

Possibly my mistake was to try and get the database created before digging out the license file, though I'm not sure.

Sam.
